“I wish to have a unique debut for my 18th birthday”

– Katherine, 17, Ovarian Immaculate Teratoma

Katherine has always longed for a fancy coming-of-age ceremony when she turns 18; a venue, theme, music and guests of her own choosing; dancing with her guests in the most beautiful dress she picks.  On her Wish Day, she puts aside the burden she previously carried and took her first step towards a better future.

Katherine hails from the Philippines, where a person’s coming-of-age is treated with gravity.  A formal debut is held for ladies turning 18, where 18 gentlemen present a rose each and invite the debutante to a dance, while 18 ladies will give the debutante blessings and candles.  As an important watershed to her life, Katherine has always wondered about what her own debut would be like.

Katherine was diagnosed with Ovarian Immaculate Teratoma at 14; she bore the burden, but never broke. Three years passed and she has finished her medical treatment, during which she kept thinking to herself, “What would I be like when I reach 18? Would I be able to design my debut?” She imagined herself in an elegant dress, joined by her beloved ones, dancing in a place awash with her favorite black and pink colors.  Katherine didn’t hold back in telling us her grandiose plan; from then on, she got accompany on her way to adulthood!

Walking along the Wish Journey we experienced many incredible supporters, as people came together and gave Katherine the most memorable day of her life. From her makeup, costume, birthday cake, venue decorations and photography, everyone gave their best to accommodate Katherine’s desire.  On the Wish Day, we could not take our eyes from our birthday girl who wore a stunning evening gown, walking down the stairs with her friend.  The ceremony began with Katherine’s father taking her hand for a dance and presenting the first rose.  Her brothers and guy friends followed, dancing with vigor.  Katherine’s female companions were next, her best friend Chloe fighting back tears as she made her speech to an equally emotional Katherine, “you are the strongest person I have ever met!  Stay tough and positive, we can face the future together!”

We witnessed the smiles and tears of joy on the day, we felt the warmth and sincerity from the support that was present. With these the Wish Child will overcome any challenge thrown at her, and a bright future awaits!
