“The Wish Gave Me Motivation to Step Out of My Comfort Zone and Surpass My Past Self”

– Dr Gary Ng, Wish Child of 1996

Gary’s world collapsed and his life changed drastically right after his 14th birthday when he was diagnosed with bone cancer. He was once a sports enthusiast, but everything changed after his left leg was amputated. Behind this tough and life-threatening journey, the meticulous care from his family, the support from the medical team and friends, as well as his Wish to visit Disney World in the US, became his motivation to bravely fight the illness.

Gary’s recovery process was full of challenges as he had to adapt to life with a prosthetic limb. The 7-minute walk to school, which used to be effortless, required him to rest 2–3 times after his surgery. At one point, he even questioned whether he could handle the trip to Disney World. Yet, with a mindset of challenging himself, Gary summoned up the courage and determination to embark on this adventure and start a new chapter of his life in the most magical place in the world—with his family as the best companion.

Gary felt beyond grateful for having a Wish. Apart from the opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled time after treatment, it also proved that he could step out of his comfort zone and actively explore the world. Completing each day’s itinerary became a challenge for Gary to surpass his past self, step by step regaining his confidence. He even picked up his favorite hobby, sports, again after the trip and eventually represented Hong Kong in various international games for the disabled.

The Wish also motivated Gary to work hard on his studies—he successfully entered the Faculty of Medicine and returned to the orthopedic ward of Tuen Mun Hospital, where he received treatment, as an intern doctor, hoping to encourage patients and families through his own story.

After all these years, Gary continues to share his wish journey with every child patient he meets. It is a story about the power of a Wish—and the spark of hope that lies within.
