World Wish Month:
Uniting the City to Make Wishes Come True

Every April, we gather to celebrate the power of a wish and the profound impact it brings to children with critical illnesses. Our story began on April 29, 1980, when 7-year-old Christopher Greicius, who was battling leukemia, shared his heartfelt wish to become a police officer. With the dedicated support of the Government’s Department, Christopher’s wish came true that day.

Deeply moved by the experience, the individuals who helped fulfill his wish sought to share this joy with more children, leading to the founding of Make-A-Wish that same year. This spark of hope resonated across the globe, evolving into a worldwide movement. Since 1998, Make-A-Wish International has officially designated April 29 as World Wish Day to bring the community to bring the community together in granting life changing wishes.

We believe that wishes don’t come true by luck or chance. They come true because of WishMakers—individuals who donate, fundraise, or lend their voices to our cause. Together, we turn the “impossible” into “possible.”

A WishMaker is anyone who takes action for wish children. By bringing wishes to life, WishMakers replace fear with confidence, sadness with joy and anxiety with hope for children facing critical illnesses. But we need more. We need you. Because all it takes to make wishes come true, is you!

“Research has shown that a wish can improve a child’s quality of life and even increase their chances of recovery, making it a vital turning point beyond medical treatment. It turns the ‘impossible’ into ‘possible,’ replacing a family’s anxiety and stress with optimism and hope. This invaluable strength is exactly why we, as healthcare professionals, are so eager to refer cases to Make-A-Wish.”

Dr Pamela Lee | Honorary consultant, Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Hong Kong Children’s Hospital

“The joy of realizing a wish motivated me to complete the rest of my medical treatments more courageously and gave me strength to study hard after I recovered, so that I could be admitted to my dream course and fulfill another wish of my life.” Today, she is a professional pediatric nurse, caring wholeheartedly for children who face critical illnesses like she did. She has also joined our volunteer team, helping to capture and grant the wishes of our Wish Children and sharing her story to inspire them to face challenges bravely — continuing to pass on the everlasting power of a wish.

“We firmly believe that the welfare of children should take priority over all else, and this act of giving has made our special day even more meaningful. Knowing that our donation brings genuine joy and warmth to children battling illnesses provides us with immense motivation. We are certain that contributing to a happier upbringing for these children will create a lasting, positive impact on their lives.”

“I saw firsthand how a wish gave a child the will to endure years of medical challenges. When that wish was finally granted, I realized its true power: it is the strength to persevere.

People often think we are the ones helping, but truly, these children are the ones inspiring me. Their courage and pure smiles remind me that the challenges I face are small. Their resilience is what empowers me to keep going.”
